On Saturday 4th September 2021, players aged from 21 to 61 graced Wimbledon RFC 1st team pitch with one thing on their mind - celebrating 30 years of the incredible adult female section at our Club. Due to COVID, this event had been moved twice but this didn't dampen the spirits of the team, in fact it made everyone even more excited and determined to have a good time!

In previous years, we have played Oldies v Newbies but, this time, we decided to shake things up and play mixed teams - and so, the Hornets and the Eagles were formed.

Within 5 minutes of kicking off, the word "friendly" and "gentle" were thwarted from the players' vocabulary! There were two players who were wearing bibs (acting as non contact players due to age and injury) and, within 10 minutes, both deemed the thought of not getting stuck in too difficult and the bibs were launched towards the touchline.

The match was a splendid display of rugby, with those who hadn't played for a number of years getting completely stuck in those who still continue to play (whether at Wimbledon or elsewhere) enjoying the company of everyone around them.

Post match, players enjoyed looking at photos, tour handbooks and programmes from the dark ages and reminiscing about times gone by. We even managed to get a photograph of 9 players who embarked on the Paris Tour 1991- they haven't all been together for 30 years! Celebrations continued until the wee hours and players and supporters woke up on Sunday thinking about entering Board meetings and first Parent/Teacher meets with black eyes and aching bodies in the week ahead! FUN, rugby and lifelong friendships really were the winner on this day.
