The match was close throughout, the final kick of the game eventually deciding the outcome. Camberley started stronger with an upper hand at scrum time and a clever kick through saw full back Luke Outhwaite touch down out wide. Wimbledon responded strongly and with their first real attack in the opposition twenty two metre area put captain Jack Cooke into a strong position to barge over the line in front of the posts, Connor Bissett adding the conversion. A scrum penalty to Camberley allowed them to take the lead 8 points to 7. The Wimbledon defence was severely tested but precise tackling and great scrambling kept the visitors at bay. A foray into the Wimbledon half resulted in a penalty to the home team that Bissett put over to give Wimbledon a 10-8 half time lead.
Camberley prospered in the scrums but really struggled to secure quality lineout ball. A scrum from a knock on at a lineout saw Wimbledon’s best move of the match which had a wrap around play send wing Tom Bracegirdle over in the left hand corner. However five minutes later a wide attack had Camberley drawing level with a try in the far right corner. The remaining fifteen minutes were a very tense affair with both sides securing a penalty score for an 18-18 scoreline with less than five minutes to go. Camberley were on the attack but a dropped ball was scooped up by No 8 Andy Fadera and hoofed down the pitch. A great chase resulted in a scrum for Wimbledon. From the scrum the hosts sensibly retained possession and eventually drew the key penalty that Bissett slotted to secure the win.
Steve Hill Wimbledon RFC Director of Rugby commented; ‘I am incredibly pleased for the whole squad. They worked tirelessly against a very strong Camberley team. Our work rate in defence and ability to disrupt their lineout proved crucial. I thought our half backs Jonny Mason and Olly Latto ran the game extremely well whilst debutant flanker Tom Williams had a huge game. Just as pleasing was to see our second team win against Camberley 2s –a cracking afternoon!’
