Wimbledon 2’s 75 Battersea Ironsides 2’s 15

Wimbledon continued their pursuit of the Surrey Premiership League 1 title with a resounding victory against an Ironsides side who had won four of their previous five outings but who had no answers to the pace and mobility of the home side. The first half in particular saw good handling with both forwards and backs clearly enjoying time with the ball in hand.

Olly Thomas had opened the scoring for the Dons on three minutes but after a period of solid defence from the Ironsides the floodgates opened. Centre Gerard Pieterse, in his first start for the club, touched down twice either side of setting up two more tries with strong bursts from deep, one for Jamie Millais and a second for Olly Thomas. Further tries followed from skipper Finn Taylor, Millais with his second, and Rory Cramp, to take the Dons into half-time with a 54-0 lead.

After two more tries early in the second half, from Cramp and fly half Calum Young, Ironsides finally got onto the scoresheet, but within minutes the Dons pack had driven over for what turned out to be their final score of the match. Ironsides were to score two more tries late in the match, with Wimbledon down to thirteen players after an injury and a yellow card, but it was too little and too late. Calum Young converted ten of the eleven tries, a number from close to the touchline, leaving the final score at 75-15. This was another impressive win for the 2’s.

Jamie Millais had a lively game in the back row, Pieterse had a big influence in the centre before injury cut his game short, and it was good to see prop Abu Abdul back on the pitch after a long period out through injury.

Next up for the Dons is an away fixture against Sutton and Epsom on February 11th. Sitting in second place behind Dorking but with a game in hand the title is in their hands.
