Wimbledon 20 Clifton 15

This was an excellent, hard fought and well-earned win for Wimbledon. It was a triumph for a very solid 15 man team effort with Wimbledon leading for a large part of the game, Clifton coming back to draw level around the middle of the second half and then Wimbledon taking it away again with two minutes to go.

The game started with some good early pressure by Wimbledon earning them a penalty on 10 minutes which was kicked for touch and then driven over from the lineout - an excellent try for Ben Brooks converted by James Doe. (7-0)

The next ten minutes saw more good pressure and possession from Wimbledon with some penalties but no points. However, on 20 minutes, a missed kick for touch by Wimbledon with no follow up or defence led to some nice open play by Clifton and an unconverted try. (7-5)

More good work by Wimbledon followed and on the half hour mark the ball was flung out wide from a lineout resulting in a try for winger Ollie Hutson. (12-5)

Wimbledon kept control for the remainder of the first half and all looked good at half time.

The second half saw a resurgence of effort from Clifton and after eight minutes they scored a well worked try out wide that was converted and the scores were level. (12-12). For the next 10 minutes both sides were equally balanced before Clifton earned a penalty and took the lead for the first time after 60 minutes. (12-15)

Wimbledon swung back into life and after another five minutes a penalty for them brought the scores back level. (15-15) The game was then close fought until with two minutes to go and after a good period of attrition by Wimbledon Dan Laventure went over in the corner for another very good try. The game was won. (20-15)
