A warm welcome back for the start of the season

Match Report: Sidcup 28 – Wimbledon 12
For the new coaching team at Wimbledon this was one fixture that they didn’t want to have as the first of 26 matches. But even though the score line looks bad, in fact Wimbledon held the lead from the 3rd to 61st minutes and Sidcup’s victory was only secured as Wimbledon’s forwards were dominated by a large Sidcup pack, who like to keep the ball to themselves. For their part Sidcup did themselves no favours by upsetting the referee resulting in them receiving three yellow cards and the resulting penalties with Wimbledon benefitting.
Outside half Bryan Croke gave an immaculate display of kicking and his four penalties on 3, 12, 23 and 49 minutes were the only rewards that Wimbledon received. The last coming after a break-through first by the centres Ti Pairama, and Neil Brown and with lock Rob Tait in support, he was held up just short of the line but the referee called Wimbledon back to 15 metres for a penalty that Croke took immediately. Other positives for Wimbledon were debuts given to four new players and especially lock Aiden O’Brien who kept in the match against bigger and more experienced opponents. Rob Tit’s lineout work was also near to his best and this was helped by accurate throwing from captain Eoin Mullen. It was also good to see scrum half Charlie Morgan back after missing most of last season through injury. The tackling was good throughout especially by flanker Steve May. A negative was the probable concussion suffered by prop Ben Davies after a clash of heads in open play.
It was also impressive that Wimbledon were able to defend a long way from their line and at no time did Sidcup have a period of pressure near to Wimbledon’s line. But with credit to Sidcup they did take the chances that were offered with their left wing Nat Scales taking his only chance with a strong run on 15 minutes to score wide out on the left and other tries at the end came from lock Steve Evans and right wing Dickie Day, conversions came from outside half Jamie Cutler.
With some regular players returning and becoming available for selection Wimbledon’s team should be stronger in the next match.
Next week Wimbledon will be at home against Dover with a 3pm kick-off.
